Someday, I’m gonna seal up
that gnarled dogwood tree
across the street from my house–
jade lichen, ragged bark
creamy heart-shaped petals and all–
and cram it into a letter-sized envelope
and mail it to you on Death Row
so you can stow it beneath your bunk
and pull it out in secret, while all the other
men sleep, when all the guards
drowse at their posts,
so you can inhale the same floral-
pollen that drifted on spring breezes
through the gray lace curtains
in my living room to the wingback
chair where I sit and write this poem
for you
